The Chicago Lighthouse Will Host Low Vision Products Show in Schaumburg, IL
In order to expand consumer awareness, The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired is taking its retail operations to the suburbs of Chicago.
CHICAGO, IL, March 10, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Hosted by The Chicago Lighthouse, the low vision products show is scheduled for Saturday, March 13, at the Friendship Village - 350 W. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg, IL. There is no fee to attend and the show will be open to the public from ten o'clock in the morning until three in the afternoon.
Low vision aides such as talking, voice recognition clocks and watches, portable or desktop magnifiers, and specialized eyewear and canes will be displayed. The Chicago Lighthouse staff will also demonstrate new technology such as electronic magnification tools (CCTV), voice-prompted GPS devices, and portable reading instruments such as the Intel Reader and the knfbReader.
"One in five persons, over the age of 65, is affected by low vision usually caused by macular degeneration" said Tom Perski, director of rehabilitation services for the Lighthouse. "With statistics like this, we want people to know what's out there that will help maximize remaining vision and simplify daily activities. Unfortunately, in the suburbs there are really no resources or retailers where people can see these products, try them out and get explanations or advice from experts. We really hope to provide people with low vision and their families this opportunity. However, professionals in low vision, nursing, education, or even tech enthusiasts will benefit and find this event very interesting."
All products displayed at the show will be available for purchase on site, however some larger items will need to be arranged for future delivery. Chicago Lighthouse plans to schedule more events throughout Chicagoland suburbs in the near future. For more information on the Schaumburg event, or to request notification of future events, call 312/666-1331 or visit www.chicagolighthouse.org
